Clinical care/Stressed, anxious, or burned out
Stress and the nervous system
Your nervous system isn't broken. It's stuck on.
Wired but tired. Racing at night, flat in the morning. A gut that reacts to everything. This is the front door of the practice, because almost everything I treat runs through it.
What's actually happening
Your autonomic nervous system has two arms. One is the accelerator: heart rate up, muscles tight, adrenaline out. The other is the brake, carried mostly by the vagus nerve: digestion on, heart settled, inflammation held down. They're meant to trade off through the day.
Under long stress, illness, or an inflamed gut, the brake goes quiet and the accelerator gets loud. That state has a name in the research, it can be measured in your heart rate variability, and it shows up early. It is not a character flaw. It is a circuit that has been running one way for too long.
Here's the part that matters: the loop runs in both directions. Calm the system and the gut settles. Settle the gut and the system calms. There is more than one door into the same room, which is why this practice uses more than one tool.
How Chinese medicine reads it
The old map is more precise than people expect. Three patterns come up constantly, and they need different treatment.
- Stuck qi. Irritability, sighing, a tight chest, a gut that knots up, symptoms that get worse with frustration. The Liver system, in Chinese terms, and the most common pattern I see in people who are "handling it."
- An unsettled Heart. Racing thoughts at night, palpitations, dreams that wake you, a mind that won't land. The Heart houses the mind in this medicine, and when it's not anchored, nothing is.
- Empty reserves. The burnout pattern. Exhausted and wired at the same time, cold, low back ache, no bounce left. The Kidney system, which in Chinese medicine holds the reserves you were born with and the ones you've spent.
Your pulse and your tongue tell me which one you are, and often it's two at once. The plan follows from that, not from a questionnaire.
What a plan looks like
Weeks one to three
Weekly acupuncture, your first formula, and one breathing practice you'll actually do. The goal is to feel the system drop, even briefly, so you know it can.
Weeks four to eight
Visits spread out. Sleep and digestion get addressed directly. Herbs get adjusted. If labs were ordered, we read them together.
After that
Most people move to maintenance or stop. You leave with a formula that fits you, a practice you own, and a clear idea of what sets you off and what brings you back.
When the stress has a deeper root
Some stress is not about this year. It's grief that never got carried. A life that doesn't fit the person living it. A disconnection from where you come from, and from the practices your own people once had for exactly this. I meet that in clinic all the time, and the needles help, but they don't finish it.
For that work there is a separate door. Not medical, not a substitute for care, and not for everyone. But it's there.
